LeBron Leads from the Sidelines as Lakers Learn from Opening Loss

LeBron James might not be on the court yet, but he’s still making an impact for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although sidelined with sciatica, James played a key role during Wednesday’s film session as the team reviewed their 119-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors. Head coach JJ Redick said LeBron was “really helpful,” guiding players through mistakes and offering insight.

“I told them — him asking questions, giving input, having that back-and-forth — it’s healthy,” Redick said. “I want that every time we watch film. If you’ve got something to say, speak up.”

James, who’s expected to miss a few more weeks before starting his record 23rd NBA season, watched the opener from the bench in a suit, sitting slightly above his teammates. Draymond Green even joked about his “Phil Jackson chair.” Despite showing little emotion as the Lakers fell behind by 17 before rallying late, James stayed engaged throughout.

He didn’t participate in training camp or preseason to manage his nerve issues, and there’s no firm return date yet. The Lakers hope he’ll be back sometime in November.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, has plenty to fix — 20 turnovers and too many open threes gave Golden State control. The Lakers will look to bounce back Friday against Minnesota, the team that knocked them out of last season’s playoffs.

One bright spot: Luka Doncic erupted for 43 points, adding 12 rebounds and nine assists in a dominant performance. He did, however, need postgame treatment for a minor groin strain.

“He seems fine,” Redick said. “It doesn’t look serious. He got treatment this morning and practiced with us. We’ll keep an eye on it, but nothing major.”
