PASADENA, Calif. — NBA legend Magic Johnson is set to lead the 137th Rose Parade as its grand marshal next year.

The 66-year-old former Los Angeles Lakers superstar will make his way down Colorado Boulevard on January 1, joining one of America’s most beloved New Year’s traditions.

“I’m going to be waving like crazy to all the great fans,” Johnson said with a big smile during Wednesday’s announcement at Tournament House in Pasadena. “The Rose Parade is watched even more than the football game. Wow, a lot of pressure.”

Later that day, Johnson will also take part in the coin toss for the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the 112th Rose Bowl game. “I’m a big football fan, too,” he added.

Tournament of Roses President Mark Leavens announced Johnson as the 2026 grand marshal, fittingly tying into next year’s parade theme — “The Magic in Teamwork.”

Johnson reflected on his humble beginnings, recalling his childhood in Lansing, Michigan. “I grew up a poor kid, turning on the TV every New Year’s Day to see who was the grand marshal,” he said. “Who would ever think I’d be the one one day?”

He expressed gratitude that his mother is still alive to witness the moment and called the honor “a true blessing.”

Johnson also said he’s looking forward to sharing the special day with his children and grandchildren, making the celebration even more meaningful for his family.
